Hingis Tops Williams

Martina Hingis lost the first three games then rallied to win a battle of 16-year-olds, beating Venus Williams 6-4, 6-2 in the third round of the Lipton Tennis Championships at Key Biscayne, Fla.

The match was the first between the two talented teenagers. Hingis improved to 22-0 this year.

Fourth-seeded Monica Seles, playing in her first tournament this year, advanced to the fourth round by beating Amy Frazier 6-3, 6-3.

In men’s play, Mark Philippoussis used two 140-mph serves in overpowering Wayne Ferriera 6-3, 6-3 to reach the fourth round. Third-seeded Michael Chang’s 11-match winning streak ended when he lost to Sergi Bruguera of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

Thomas Johansson of Sweden defeated Italy’s Renzo Furlan 6-3, 6-4 to win the St. Petersburg (Russia) Open tennis tournament.
