Three days after learning she was off the U.S. ski team, Carrie Sheinberg of Port Washington, N.Y., turned in her best performance of the season, winning the giant slalom at the U.S. Alpine Championships at Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

Tatum Skoglund of Bellevue, Wash., second after the first run, was the runner-up at 2:14.66. Heidi Voelker of Park City, Utah, skiing her final race before retiring, was third at 2:14.67 in her fourth race of the season after breaking a shoulder.

Kenya’s Paul Tergat beat Morocco’s Salah Hissou to win his third straight IAAF World Cross Country Championship and the $40,000 first prize in Turin, Italy. Kenya took the men’s team title for the 12th year in a row.

Ethiopia’s Derartu Tulu overcame Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain to win the women’s race for the second time in three years, leading Ethiopia to its first women’s team title.

Marlin surpassed $1 million in career earnings after fending off a late challenge from Sunshack to win the $266,600 San Luis Rey Stakes by three-quarters of a length on the turf at Santa Anita.
