Waltz Wins Two Events Again

For the second consecutive week, Washington State University track and field standout Ian Waltz has become a double-winner after claiming the men’s discus and shot put at the Stanford Invitational.

Waltz, a sophomore from Post Falls, Idaho, won Saturday’s collegiate men’s shot put competition with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 60 feet, 4-1/2 inches. Sunday, Waltz produced a 181-3 toss to win the discus.

Hilary Mawindi was the only winner for the Cougars at the large (approximately 1,000 collegians and 1,000 prep competitors), prestigious meet.

Mawindi, a junior from Gwere, Zimbabwe, won the men’s triple jump with an NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 52-2. He also placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 23-10-1/4.

WSU’s indoor All-American men were back in action with Bernard Lagat and Eric Kamau taking second and third in the 1500-meter run. Lagat’s 3:42.68 and Kamau’s 3:42.95 were Pac-10 and NCAA provisional qualifying times.

Rasto Kiplangat ran a 1:49.42 for second place in the men’s 800 meters, just .22 seconds off an NCAA PQ time.

The Cougars women sprinters had a good showing with Tamika Brown placing third in the 200-meter dash in a wind-aided time of 24.10-1/4.

Saturday, WSU will be the host school for the Cougar Invitational.
