13 Zulu Nationalists Guilty Of Murder

A South African court convicted 13 members of a Zulu nationalist party Tuesday in a shooting-and-stabbing rampage that slaughtered 18 political rivals on Christmas Day 1995.

Judge Hilary Squires finished an eight-hour reading of his verdict by pronouncing 13 of the 18 defendants guilty of murder and attempted murder, calling the attack an attempt by the Inkatha Freedom Party to rid the region of supporters of President Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress.

The 13 face possible life sentences in penalty hearings that start Wednesday.
