Judy Stuenkel Honored For Childhood Education

Judy Stuenkel, a Head Start preschool teacher, was named 1997 Early Childhood Professional of the Year by the Eastern Washington Association for the Education of Young Children, and Spokane County Head Start.

Stuenkel was recognized for professional involvement in early childhood education, including direct service to children and families, community service or regional and state activities.

Also honored was Jan Swanson, Head Start preschool teacher at Bancroft Center.

Army 2nd Lt. John Ahrens, son of John and Sylvia Ahrens, Veradale, graduated from the engineer officer basic course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Ahrens is a 1992 graduate of University High School and a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

Annelucy Stilger Virnig, 9 of Spokane, received first prize in the Cricket League writing competition. Her story telling of when she grows up appears in the March issue of Cricket magazine.

Jennifer Yochum, daughter of Mike and Linda Yochum of Chattaroy, was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester at Northland College in Ashland, Wis.

Inland Northwest winners from the Home and Yard Show’s Chain Saw Carving Competition are:

Second place: Conrad Sandaball, Northport, Wash., a large eagle.

Third: John Schulz, Elk, a troll.

Fifth: Shawn Turney, Loon Lake, Wash., bear tree.

Three Spokane students attending Hillsdale (Mich.) College were named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester.

The students and their parents are: Luke Kennedy, son of Dr. and Mrs. Tod Kennedy; Sarah Pederson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brad Pederson; and Sharon Treybig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Treybig.

Garret Carlson, son of John and Marie Carlson, Spokane, graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in business. He is a 1992 graduate from North Central High School.

Four Spokane-area students attending Western Washington University have been awarded scholarships: Jason Borhauer, son of Larry and Laura Borhauer and a Shadle Park High School graduate, received a $2,500 Katherine A. Brunken Presidential Scholarship.

David Johnson, son of Daniel and Marilyn Johnson, Spokane and a Central Valley High School graduate, received a $1,000 Jack and Ramona Cole Memorial Scholarship.

Katherine Kerking, daughter of Kerry and Judy Kerking of Spokane, received a $300 William D. Cole Memorial Scholarship.

Patrick Kohl, son of Brian Kohl of Medical Lake, and Susan Kohl of Spokane, received a $2,500 James Michael Haskell Memorial Scholarship. He is a graduate from Medical Lake High.

Polly Dolliver, Spokane-area coordinator for special education in Spokane School District 81, has been named Educator of the Year by the Washington State Council for Exceptional Children.
