Post Falls’ $1 Million Levy Passes Board Learns Dog Park Won’t Be Donated

Post Falls residents overwhelmingly approved a $1 million supplemental levy Tuesday to benefit public schools.

Of the 1,347 votes cast, 73 percent favored the measure.

It needed a simple majority to pass.

The additional $500,000 a year for two years will be used for building maintenance, school buses, textbooks and curriculum improvements.

The vote will not increase individual property tax bills, officials said, because the school district’s total assessed value of property has increased.

While waiting for the results Tuesday night, board members learned that the owner of the defunct Coeur d’Alene Greyhound park will not give the race track facility to the district for conversion to a high school.

Some residents had hoped for a donation of the property, which would have been less expensive than building a new high school.

Superintendent Richard Harris showed board members a letter from track owner Paul Bryant Jr., saying he expects to continue leasing the property and may sell it in the future.

“We gave it a try. It was a long shot,” Harris said of the district’s request that the property be donated.

“It didn’t work out, so we’ll go on to other things.”
