20 Area Players To Take Floor For All-State Basketball Games

Greater Spokane League big men Chris Anderson and Erik Carlson are among 20 area players selected for the four Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association all-state games June 19 in Yakima’s Sundome.

Anderson, 6-foot-4, who led Shadle Park to the State AAA tournament, and the 6-5 Carlson will play on the AAA City team that will meet the AAA State team coached by Ed Pepple of state champion Mercer Island.

In the past, the all-state series included two games in Spokane and two at a West Side site. The rosters featured AAA and AA players in one game, A and B players in the other.

Now four games, separated into the state’s normal classifications, will occur one after another in Yakima.

The AA State team, coached by Cheney’s Denny Humphrey, will include Cheney’s Tucker Urdahl and August Parker, Colville’s Tim Sprangers, Riverside’s Ryan Monroe and West Valley’s Josh Sweet.

Lakeside’s George Petticrew and Billy Bender, and Carlos Simmons of Medical Lake will play for the A East team.

Rory Rickard of state champion Republic will coach the B West team, including Republic’s Jason Baldwin and Mark Rickard.

The B East team, coached by Dan Smith of state runner-up Reardan, will include Liberty’s Travis Greenwalt, Springdale’s Ben Peterson, Rosalia’s Ben Scheele, Ritzville’s John Galbreath, Reardan’s Travis Titchenal, LaCrosse-Washtucna’s Troy Nealey, Sprague-Harrington’s David Countryman and Jason Pierce of Almira/Coulee-Hartline.

Coaches named Galbreath Class B player of the year. Other players of the year were Prairie’s Dan Dickau, AAA; La Center’s Derek VanWeerdhuizen, A; and Ballard’s Michael Johnson, AA, who also was selected Mr. Basketball.
