Frontier League Season Under Way Despite Snowpack

Lingering snow north of Spokane has hindered early season practices for Riverside’s soccer and tennis teams. But, ready or not, the Frontier League season is under way for the teams.

Many of Riverside/Deer Park’s boys soccer players are experienced, easing the fact the team didn’t hire a new coach until right before the start of the season.

Kevin Moon, women’s assistant coach for five years at Whitworth College, was hired on Friday prior to the team’s first Monday practice.

Coupled with the fact that snow came early and stayed late, said Moon, “to be totally honest I’ve not had a very good look yet.”

Seniors Ryan Baker, center-midfielder, and Ty Reddinger, sweeper, junior defender Mark Ziehnert and forward Jeff Westenskow, and sophomore goal keeper Jeremy Nelson will make his job easier.

Riverside was third in the Frontier League last year and second in the league playoffs. Two teams qualify for state this spring.

The roster features veteran midfielders Sam Fleetwood, Jason Remington and Isaac Hodgson, plus Justin Emch, Winston Hodgson, Jason Shaffer and Nathanial Calamia.

Forwards are the experienced Phil Daubel and Zac Ross plus Spencer Nedved, Ty Krohn, and Cabe Moses.

Defenders are returnee Paul Murray, Jared Stark and Derek Krantz.

Freshman forward-midfielder Kevin Herson, said Moon, will have an impact. Backup goal keeper is Logan Krohn.

“We may struggle at first,” said Moon. “Towards the middle and ending of the season, we will start to come around.”

Ram junior Bernice Stime was undefeated in league until district.

“She looks a lot stronger now than then,” said coach Brent Monroe.

Also in singles are junior Ann Jorgenson, her sophomore sister Val Jorgenson and senior Kellie Riddle.

Doubles teams are junior Colleen Lorenz and senior Nikki Snyder, junior Abbey McCutcheon and sophomore Aleshia Oglesbee. Third team will come from senior Somer Cook and any of 10 other players.

Monroe’s girls team has a turnout of 40 players.

Senior Ryan Monroe and junior Jared Frowick are the top two boys singles players. Also in singles are senior Sam Zaprzalka and junior Evan Schoedel.

Doubles players are juniors James Tucker and Tyler Wittle and sophomores Adam Starr and Ben Cromer.

Third doubles will come from six other boys candidates.
