Gravel Mine Proposed Near Existing Pit

THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 1997

Murphy Bros. Inc. contractors wants to open a new gravel mine adjacent to its current gravel pit north of Airway Heights.

The company is proposing to excavate rock off 108 acres to the west of its existing mine operation along Hayford Road at Euclid.

To do that, the company needs a zone change. A hearing is scheduled before the Spokane County hearing examiner at 9 a.m. next Wednesday in the commissioners’ assembly room in the basement of the Public Works Building.

Company officials said they would begin mining the new land after they finishing extracting gravel from the existing operation.

The proposed mine is to the west of Hayford. It currently is zoned for agricultural use.

Murphy Bros. is requesting a change to a mining zone.

According to documents at the county Courthouse, the mine would produce about 160 truckloads of gravel during the asphalt-paving season from April through October. That is the same rate as at the existing mine, which has a rock crusher operating at the site.

The county Planning Department would require a reclamation plan as condition for any permits.
