Sp Parents Put On Variety Show

The year is 1969. Tie-dyed shirts, billowy bell-bottoms, peace, love and “Laugh-In” are the grooviest.

Shadle Park High School booster parents are bringing it all back with the first “Splash on Ash” variety show tonight.

It’s a campy take-off on “Laugh-In,” Dan Rowan and Dick Martin’s variety show that featured Goldie Hawn, Tiny Tim, Henry Gibson and guest appearances by stars of the day.

A mix of serious and silly, the Shadle lineup includes singing duo “Sunny and Share,” “The Unknown Juggler,” and the Macarena performed by some of Shadle’s most familiar faces.

One of the city of Spokane’s top administrators will offer a whimsical look as some of the city’s deeper problems.

There’s a lot more.

Throughout it all, heads and one-liners will be popping in and out of the portholes in the Laugh-In-style wall that is the backdrop for the production.

“My kids are completely embarrassed,” said performer Donn Gehret, who has two Shadle teens.

It’s the first year for “Splash on Ash.” Organizers hope it will become as successful as Ferris High School’s “Ham on Regal.”

“We thought there should be something on the North Side,” said Monica Adkins, president of the Shadle Booster Club.

“What we’re really trying to do here is have some fun.” said director Don Largent.

The club had been talking about producing a variety show for about a year. Money raised by the group helps fund 31 school organizations including debate, choir, sports, drama and bands.

“Splash on Ash” begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $2.
