Benefit Earns $98,000 For Ywca

From Staff Reports

It took all day to add up the money.

Six hours after the YWCA of Spokane’s benefit breakfast, employees finished counting cash and checks totaling just under $98,000.

“This is the most we’ve ever made,” said Joanne Shiosaki, YWCA community relations director.

About 900 people came to hear track star Evelyn Ashford speak at the Spokane Ag Trade Center. Attendance this year increased by about 200 people, Shiosaki said. More than 25 volunteers helped organize the event.

“It took a year’s worth of planning to get that many people out at 7:30 in the morning,” she said. “It’s a real tribute to our volunteers and the community.”

The money will be used for YWCA programs including alternatives to domestic violence, youth activities and a transition school for homeless children.
