Pincay On The Mend

Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay remains hospitalized in fair condition, a day after breaking three ribs in a spill at Santa Anita.

Pincay, 50, was resting at an Arcadia, Calif., hospital, where X-rays also revealed a hairline fracture of the pelvis. It was not known when he will be released.

Pincay’s mount, Strawberry Patch, fractured his left front cannonbone in Wednesday’s second race and had to be destroyed.

Spite and Malice held off a charge by Precious Peace to win the $35,000 feature race on opening day at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash. The Washington-bred 3-year-old filly won the first stakes race of the second season at the Auburn track. She covered 5-1/2 furlongs in 1:03-4/5 over a fast track. The statewide handle for the meet’s opening day was $942,129 with statewide attendance of 5,583.
