Alpine skiing

Despite plenty of snow, the Mt. Spokane Ski Area closed last weekend. Skiers who hiked the mountain since then say the wind whistling through the trees at the deserted summit sounds like “Ssshhame.”

The 15th annual Hawaiian Daze party to benefit the ski patrol at 49 Degrees North will be held Saturday. Info: (509) 935-6649.

Schweitzer’s Caribbean Carnival and Northwest Iguanafest is this weekend. Schweitzer’s regular season has been extended to April 13. Discounts to season-pass holders from other areas. Info: (208) 263-9555.

Silver Mountain, where regular operation ends April 6, will stay open Saturdays until July - or until interest dies. Mount Spokane skiers - $10 passes at Silver rest of season. Info: (208) 783-1111.

Nordic skiing

Saturday is the last day of grooming for Mt. Spokane State Park trails. Snow conditions are excellent.

Sun Mountain, the Community Trail, Mazama and Rendezvous trails near Winthrop are open.

Stevens Pass trails are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Snowmobiling

County groomers at Mount Spokane and the North and South Baldy areas will be finished next week, but conditions remain ideal for weekend outings. Remember: Sullivan Creek Road is closed until April 1.
