Wwp Reshuffles Its Board Of Directors Schwarzkopf, Silver Leaving; Kelly, Jewell Will Join Board

Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf will step down from the Washington Water Power Co. board of directors in May after four years of service.

With the consent of shareholders, he will be replaced by John Kelly, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Alaska Air Group and Alaska Airlines.

Former legislator B. Jean Silver is also retiring after nine years on the board. She will be replaced by Sarah “Sally” Jewell, president of Washington Mutual Bank’s Western Bank Division.

The changes are the first since Schwarzkopf joined the Spokane utility’s board in 1993. The company said schedule demands dictated the decision by Schwarzkopf, who has accepted positions on several other corporate and nonprofit boards since he retired from the U.S. Army after leading allied forces in the Gulf War.

Silver was an accountant and consultant on economic development to the city of Spokane in addition to serving 10 years in the Washington Legislature as a representative.

Chairman Paul Redmond said Kelly and Jewell will bring valuable experience with deregulation to WWP.

Kelly has held several high-level positions with Alaska and its Horizon Air affiliate over the last decade.

Jewell started her business career with Mobil Oil Corp. before shifting to banking 14 years ago. Since then she has worked for Rainier Bank, Security Pacific Bank and West One Bank, each one of which disappeared in the wave of mergers that has transformed the banking industry in recent years.

Jewell also serves on the boards of Recreational Equipment Inc. and Premera, the parent of Medical Service Corp. of Eastern Washington.
