Conoco Will Drill At National Monument
Conoco has won permission to begin drilling for oil Tuesday in the nation’s newest national monument, a step that has drawn phone calls and letters of protest from environmentalists.
The oil unit of DuPont Co. this week received a permit signifying final permission to drill an exploratory well on a section of state land atop Kaiparowits Plateau in the new Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
Conoco said work won’t likely start for a couple of months, despite approval from the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining to begin next week.
