The dollar rose against key currencies including the German mark and Japanese yen in quiet European trading today.
Gold markets in London, Zurich and Hong Kong were closed for the Good Friday holiday.
Foreign exchange trading was extremely light with most European markets closed and only France, Belgium and Italy trading.
The dollar was at 1.6768 German marks, up from 1.6740 on Thursday and at 123.66 Japanese yen, up from 123.55. Against the Swiss franc the dollar was at 1.4485, down from 1.4580. The British pound was quoted at $1.6330, up from $1.6310 late Thursday. With the French franc, the dollar was at 5.6490, up from 5.6407 while the Canadian dollar was at 1.3700.
