‘Subconscious’ Exhibit At Lorinda Knight

Nina Culver Correspondent

Richard Schindler uses wood, tools and other items to create works of art to speak to a viewer’s subconscious.

The Spokane artist’s exhibit, “Subconscious Surfaces,” will be on display at the Lorinda Knight Gallery, 523 W. Sprague, April 4-26. An artist’s reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Schindler, who attended the San Francisco Art Institute and received a master of fine arts degree from Stanford University, has lived in the Northwest for nearly 20 years.

Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and by appointment on Monday and Sunday.

One man’s garbage …

Spokane-area artists Rik Nelson, Cheney, and Harold Balazs, Mead, have helped elevate garbage to an art form, according to a press release.

Works of both men are represented in “Trashformations: Recycled Materials in Contemporary American Art and Design,” on exhibit through July 6 in Bellingham’s Whatcom Museum of History and Art’s ARCO Gallery.

Several mediums, including sculpture, jewelry, furniture and clothing, were used to change garbage into art.

After it closes in Bellingham, the exhibit will travel for two-plus years around the nation.

For more information, call the museum at (360) 676-6981.
