Tap Into Your Artistic Side

Jennifer Hayes Gonzaga Prep

Are you excited for spring break, but have no plans except for sleep and TV?

Why not try a few art classes at the Spokane Art School? Special workshops for teens will be offered. Teens can choose classes in papermaking, clay, oil pastels, acrylic painting, calligraphy and nature photography. Classes aren’t too expensive ($30 for a full day) and will fill up soon. Call 328-0900 to register.

If you already have big plans for spring break, consider enrolling in the art school’s spring session which runs April 21 through June 21. A variety of classes are being offered, so call for information or stop by the Spokane Art School across from the Arena.

Outdoor fun

Teens-n-Trails, a program sponsored by Northwest Youth Corps, is an exciting and challenging opportunity for 14- to 15-year-olds. The summer program combines the development of job, money management and social skills.

Teens also spend about 24 hours a week on conservation, reforestation and recreation projects in the Pacific Northwest. For that work you earn $5.50 an hour.

Crews get the outdoor experience by living in tents, cooking over camp stoves and fires and sharing daily camp chores.

But don’t worry, it’s not all work and no play. On weekends, crews go on hikes, get to swim, take field trips and even try white water rafting. There is a $500 tuition fee, but financial aid is available.

“Stage Door to the Future - Summer Theatre for Youth” is an intense summer workshop being offered by Eastern Washington University. The day program, for students ages 8-17, will be held June 18-July 1. Cost for the two-week experience is $195.

The workshop explores such areas as acting, music, dance, puppetry and painting. At the end of the program, students will give performances.

EWU theater instructor Donald R. McLaughlin will direct the workshop. Questions about the program should be directed to him at (509) 359-6672.
