David Duval shot a 1-under-par 71 to take a one-stroke lead over David Ogrin and Australian Craig Parry after the second round of the Houston Open in Texas.

Duval made nine straight pars at one stretch to finish the day at 8-under 136. Fred Couples had his second straight 69 for a 6-under 138, leaving him tied with Jerry Kelly, who had a 68. Phil Blackmar and Curtis Strange followed at 139, with Blackmar shooting a 71 and Strange a 72.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett shot a 74 for a total of 147, missing the cut by one stroke.

A relaxed Tammie Green shot a 5-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Kris Tschetter after two rounds of the Sprint Titleholders Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Green followed her opening-round 66 with another brilliant display on the greens, holing a 7-foot par putt on the first hole and then five more putts of about that distance for birdies.

Green was at 11-under 133. Tschetter was another stroke back after her second straight 67 that was highlighted by a hot putter.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a 77 for a total of 151, missing the cut by seven.

Gil Morgan shot a 5-under-par 67 in windy conditions to take a one-stroke lead over Jay Sigel, Tom Shaw and Bob Charles after the first round of the Bruno’s Memorial Classic in Hoover, Ala., on the senior tour.

Morgan, a seven-time PGA Tour winner, bogeyed Nos. 3 and 4, but quickly recovered with a birdie on the par-5 fifth and an eagle on the par-4 sixth, holing an 81-yard sand wedge shot.

President Clinton, an avid golfer, says the game’s most exclusive golf courses should be opened to “people of all ages and walks of life.”

Writing in the inaugural issue of Golfing Magazine, the president said, “Golf is a bit like democracy - neither should be just a spectator sport, and everyone should have a chance to play the game.”
