For A Team Said To Be In Ruin, Post Falls Doesn’t Act The Part

Jonathan Hay Correspondent

Post Falls High track coach Wade Quesnell had been hearing the rumors of his team’s demise, and he wasn’t pleased.

“Not bad for a disintegrating team, huh?” Quesnell said after watching his Trojans take both the boys and girls team titles at the Lakeland Relays on Friday evening.

The event comprises field events that combine the four best individual scores into a team score and a variety of relay races on the track.

Post Falls sprinter Jennifer Swanstrom anchored a pair of winning relays to lead the girls to a winning total of 84 points. The girls’ 400 relay set a team best time of 52.25 seconds, in part because of what Swanstrom said was their best handoffs this year.

The Post Falls boys scored 97 points to win despite not having their best sprinter and thrower healthy.

Austin Lee had the second-best discus throw of the day, without using a spin move because of an injured shoulder. Josh Mort helped the Trojans to a win in the long jump and ran in the relays, where the Trojans were without anchor Shawn Michaels.

“We’re glad to get through the week healthy and gear up for regionals next week,” Quesnell said.

Lakeland High’s Amber Jamison had the best marks in the girls triple and long jumps, events in which the Hawks won the team title. She echoed the sentiments of many of the athletes who felt the event was mainly to have a good time.

“We’re getting toward the end when it gets stressful, so it’s nice to have this laid-back meet before districts,” Jamison said.

Lake City coach Donna Messenger said she was happy with her girls’ second-place finish and was glad the athletes had a chance to finally run on a nice day.

“We had some nice things happen, but most of all it was nice to have the sun come out so we could have a good workout,” Messenger said.

Amber Barnes won the opener, but the Timberwolves settled for a non-league split with the visiting Bears because of a baserunning mistake in the second game.

Shelby McIntosh had two hits to support Barnes, who threw a six-hitter. LC, trailing 4-1 after 6-1/2 innings, appeared to have tied the game on Kim Budvarson’s triple. But Kim Koll was called out for missing third base on the way home.
