Tino Starts May With 2 More Rbis

Associated Press

Tino Martinez, fresh from setting the major-league record for RBIs in April, homered in his second at-bat in May and Bernie Williams added a two-run shot as the New York Yankees defeated Kansas City 9-1 Friday night.

Martinez, who drove in 34 runs in April, made it 2-0 with his 10th home run in the fourth. Williams had led off the inning with a double, the first hit given up by Jim Pittsley (0-2).

Williams gave the Yankees a 4-1 lead and chased Pittsley in the eighth with his third homer of the season. The Yankees added five runs in the ninth, four of them unearned because of errors by shortstop Jay Bell and reliever Randy Veres.

Yankees starter David Cone (3-2) pitched seven strong innings, giving up one run on five hits. The Royals scored their run in the fifth on Johnny Damon’s RBI double.

Twins 3, Blue Jays 2 (10)

Toronto

Chuck Knoblauch’s infield single scored Todd Walker with the winning run in the 10th inning as Minnesota snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Walker led off the inning with a single off Tim Crabtree (1-2), and Pat Meares moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

After Brent Brede’s groundout moved Walker to third, Knoblauch hit a high chopper that bounced over third baseman Ed Sprague and scored Walker.

Orioles 7, Athletics 1

Baltimore

Jimmy Key improved to 5-0 for the first time, allowing four hits in eight innings as Baltimore stretched its winning streak to four.

Mike Bordick hit two doubles and drove in three runs, and Eric Davis and Roberto Alomar homered to help Baltimore to its sixth win in seven games. The Orioles’ 18-7 record is the best in the AL.

Key struck out five, walked one and retired 15 consecutive batters at one point in lowering his ERA to 2.21 through six starts. The left-hander’s previous best start was 4-0 in 1991. Now in his 14th season, Key is the first Orioles pitcher to go 5-0 since Ben McDonald won his first seven decisions in 1994.

Red Sox 5, Rangers 4

Arlington, Texas

John Valentin singled home the go-ahead run off John Wetteland with two outs in the ninth for Boston.

American League MVP Juan Gonzalez went 0 for 5 in his first game of the season for Texas.

Clearing the bases

Before their game, the Rangers unveiled a bronze, life-sized statue of Nolan Ryan in a plaza behind center field at The Ballpark in Arlington. It was the sixth anniversary of his major league record seventh no-hitter. “It’s as big an honor as anyone could receive,” Ryan said…. Wade Boggs needs one hit to tie Lou Gehrig for 43rd place on baseball’s all-time hit list with 2,721. … Yankees outfielder Tim Raines needs 10 stolen bases to become the fourth player this century to reach 800. … The Blue Jays have lost their last nine extra-innings games, dating back to last season.
