Nina Culver Correspondent

Environmental installation artist and sculptor Mierle Laderman-Ukeles will discuss “The Power of Place: Artists, Communities and Public Space” at three locations Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ukeles began working with environmental waste in the late 1970s. Since then, she’s conducted an artistic exploration of urban waste as a social issue, a political issue and an environmental concern.

Ukeles, who has had environmental installations and sculptures displayed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, will speak at noon Tuesday in the Music Building Recital Hall on the Eastern Washington University campus; at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cheney Cowles Museum Auditorium, 2316 W. First; and at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Spokane Falls Community College Performing Arts Auditorium on campus.

The presentations are free and open to the public.

Ukeles is the final speaker of the 1996-97 Visiting Artist Lecture Series sponsored by EWU.

China, a subject for dance

Janet Wilder, director of Spokane’s Academy of Dance, has written an article about her October 1996 trip to China for the national publication Dance Teacher Now. Wilder was one of 40 international dance education delegates traveling under the auspices of People to People.

Several of Wilder’s photos accompany the article, “People to People Love China - An exchange of dance ambassadors brings increased international understanding,” published in the April issue.

HST is the subject

S’rae Stronach Alberts, a former Cheney resident, has been commissioned by the Reserve Officers Association to paint an official portrait of President Harry S. Truman in military uniform.

The painting was commissioned to celebrate the association’s 75th anniversary.

Alberts, who now lives in Federal Way, Wash., received a fine arts degree from Eastern Washington University.

The painting will be unveiled in the association’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., on June 10.
