Nc, Shadle Get Berths Into District Soccer Playoffs

North Central and Shadle Park are in. University and Gonzaga Prep are out.

NC and Shadle won winner-to-district matches Saturday as Greater Spokane League boys soccer ended the regular season with a quadruple-header at Albi Stadium.

NC edged U-Hi 1-0 in the first match. Shadle followed with a 3-1 win over G-Prep.

Ferris, Lewis and Clark and Mead had already qualified for the playoffs, but four teams were bunched in the standings and had a shot at the other two berths.

NC (4 regulation wins, 1 overtime win, 0 overtime losses, 3 regulation losses) finished with 14 points while Shadle (3-2-0-3) ended with 13. G-Prep (3-1-0-4) and U-Hi (3-0-2-3) finished with 11 points.

District opens Wednesday, with LC vs. Mead at Mead Junior High at 7 p.m., and Shadle vs. NC, tentatively at 4 p.m. NC is home team and has the right to choose a site. Both matches are loser-out.

Shadle Park 3, Gonzaga Prep 1

Zach Kingsley’s penalty kick late in the first half gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead. Prep was called for a slide tackle from behind in the penalty box, and Kingsley missed his first attempt. Prep goalkeeper Ryan Wittstruck was whistled for moving before the penalty kick, giving Kingsley another chance.

Kris Walters’ header, his eighth goal, made the score 3-0. Prep’s Nick Ascolese crossed a pass to Brad Little to end the shutout. Prep graduates just two starters, including Wittstruck.

Eric Johnson’s score late in the first half proved the difference as the Titans (3-0-2-3) were eliminated.

Mead 8, Rogers 0

John Carras scored twice as the Panthers (4-1-0-3) beat the Pirates (0-0-0-8) to clinch second place.

Carras tied J.J. Klaus, who also scored, for the team lead with three goals in league matches. Rogers scored four goals all year, just one in its final six matches.

Garth Cummings scored twice, giving him a team-high seven, as the Saxons (8-0-0-0, 24) beat the Tigers (4-0-1-3, 13) to complete their perfect season.

The Saxons are 16-0-0 overall. Ferris has a bye until May 13, when it hosts the district survivor in a match for Nos. 1 and 2 seeds to state.

Lake Washington Invitational

Mead’s April Gallagher threw 123 feet, 2 inches to place fourth in the discus at Kirkland. Teammate Jen Bennett was sixth (114-0).

University’s Casey Lektorich was fourth in the pole vault (8-0) and sixth in the javelin (116-9). Shadle Park placed third in the 800 relay (1 minute, 48 seconds).

The game, rained out Thursday, was rained out again. The makeup date is 3:45 p.m. Monday.

Idaho baseball

Lakeland 8-8, PR 1-4

Ryan Banks struck out 13 in the opener and Lakeland (15-2, 11-0) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the second game for an Intermountain League baseball sweep at Priest River.

Banks lowered his earned-run average to 0.30 with a two-hitter. Zach Wood’s fourth-inning single broke up Banks’ shutout. Lakeland’s Shane Baldwin went 3 for 3 with two runs batted in.

Woods’ grand slam in the fourth gave the Spartans (0-11) a 4-1 lead. Dan Dockter’s two-run single in the fifth put Lakeland ahead, and Bryan Phelps followed with a suicide squeeze.
