Spend More, Get More Back

The Seattle Times

Americans will need to spend at least $100 more north of the border this year before they qualify for a Canadian tax refund.

Though Canadians must pay a 7 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on their purchases, Americans can be reimbursed for this tax if they have their original receipts for at least $200 on accommodations or goods bought in Canada. (The tax on restaurant meals does not apply).

Canadian revenue officials bumped this lid to $200 from $100.

American travelers can get a GST refund by mail or at a duty-free shop on the Canadian side of the border.

To mail your receipts, call Revenue Canada (902-432-5608) for a GST brochure. Most B.C. travel information centers have applications, too.

For those who count their pennies, Americans can get nearly 2 cents more bang for their U.S. buck against Canadian currency compared to last year at this time.
