Two More Statues Of Lenin Vandalized

Compiled From Wire Services

Vandals poured paint over two statues of Vladimir Lenin on Saturday, the latest in a series of attacks on monuments to the Bolshevik leader in the city where his revolution began.

Police told the Interfax news agency one of the targeted statues was near the Finlandsky train station where Lenin made a noted speech on the eve of the 1917 revolution, the other in Tavrichesky Gardens.

Two other Lenin statues have been vandalized recently in or near St. Petersburg, still known as the Leningradsky region. One took place last weekend in the town of Pushkin, the other near the city’s Varshavsky train station on Thursday.

Thousands of statues of the Soviet founder remain standing across the former Soviet Union despite the collapse of communist rule in 1991.
