Man Struck, Killed Near Garwood Bar

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 22-year-old Rathdrum, Idaho, man died Tuesday night after he stepped in front of a woman’s pickup truck.

Margaret L. DeMoss, 54, of Athol, Idaho, was on her way home from North Idaho College where she is a student when she struck Matthew D. Stehlar with her Chevrolet pickup.

She was driving north on U.S. Highway 95 near the Garwood Saloon about 9 p.m. when Stehlar stepped onto the highway.

“She didn’t see him until the person was in her headlights,” said Idaho State Police Cpl. Pete Bowes.

She tried to stop but did not have time, Bowes said. It appears she was not speeding or violating any driving laws, he said.

Stehlar had been at the Garwood Saloon drinking earlier in the evening. He became unruly and was asked to leave, Bowes said.

His sister gave him a ride away from the tavern but he somehow ended up back on foot and apparently was trying to cross the highway to get to the tavern when he was struck, Bowes said.

He died at the accident scene.
