UCLA has decided to appeal a ruling by the NCAA committee on infractions barring the women’s softball team from competing in the upcoming NCAA tournament. The fourth-ranked Bruins (39-11) become eligible to play because an appeal won’t be considered until well after the competition finishes.

It cost The Citadel $186,000 to end its 10-year association with football coach Charlie Taaffe, according to documents released by the school. The school agreed to two payments of $93,000 to settle the lawsuit Taaffe filed in December that challenged his firing after a second drunken-driving arrest. He will receive the first payment immediately and the final one on Jan. 2.
