Nc Wins To Advance In Playoffs

Dustin Crogan scored 4-1/2 minutes into overtime Wednesday to lift North Central to a 1-0 win over visiting Shadle Park in the opening, loser-out round of the District 8-AAA boys soccer tournament.

Crogan took a pass from Bobby Johnson for just the fifth shot on goal NC (6-8) had during the day. Shadle (8-5) lost to NC 3-2 during the Greater Spokane League season.

NC plays Mead at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mead Junior High for a State AAA playoff berth. The winner meets league champion Ferris (16-0) Tuesday for seeding.

Jon Carras scored twice, including the tiebreaker with 15 minutes left, as the Panthers (11-3-1) eliminated the visiting Tigers (8-7) at Mead Junior High.

Baseball

Colville 15, Riverside 8

Brady Noble had four runs batted in, including a two-run homer in the first inning, and the visiting Indians (9-7) beat the Rams (1-15) to tie Clarkston for third place in the Frontier League.

Cailen McCurday added a solo homer in the fourth for Colville, which, with Clarkston, is trying to hold off East Valley (8-8) and Pullman (7-9) for the final two district playoff spots. Clarkston is at Pullman, and Colville at EV in season-ending doubleheaders Saturday.

B.J. Summers’ three-run shot in the second was Riverside’s first of the year.

Highly scouted Northwest Christian left-hander Jeremy Affeldt completed the final two innings of a no-hitter that began Saturday before rain intervened. Affeldt is 7-0 for the Crusaders, who completed their Panorama League-champion campaign 19-1.

Sandberg rehabs

Ferris pitcher/first baseman Eric Sandberg, injured Tuesday while sliding into home, began physical therapy Wednesday for a bruised left (pitching) shoulder.

Sandberg (6-0) may serve as designated hitter in games today against Gonzaga Prep and Friday against North Central, but won’t pitch. The second-place Saxons (9-4) end their GSL season against first-place Mead (11-3) Tuesday.

Softball

Shadle Park 4, Gonzaga Prep 2 Rainie Drake had two RBIs, and Tara Buckley went 2 for 3 to lead the visiting Highlanders (7-7 GSL) over the Bullpups (3-11).

Shadle, which clinched a district berth, had five hits in the first. Daria Toth was 2 for 3 for Prep, which was eliminated from district hopes.

Misty Gates went 4 for 6 and pitched a five-hitter in the opener as the Bantams (4-8) swept the visiting Rams to move closer to fourth-place Cheney (4-7) in the chase for the final Frontier playoff berth.

Christy Gribble had a two-run triple and Rochell King a three-run triple for Clarkston in the second game. Riverside (1-12) walked seven and hit four batters.
