Dave Trimmer And Chris Derrick S Staff writer

The Greater Spokane League track season comes down to a photo finish.

Mead and University are undefeated on the boys side and Mead and Shadle Park are perfect for the girls at 6-0. Those teams just happen to be getting together this afternoon at U-Hi.

Mead’s Panthers are trying to run their boys dual-meet streak to 149 straight, and the girls are going for their fifth league title.

In the Frontier League, the league favorites met last week, but there are still two weeks to go.

West Valley, in the driver’s seat to win the boys title, is at home today against Pullman. East Valley, which leads the girls race after beating four-time champion WV last week, also is home against Clarkston and Colville.

The Northeast A season ended Tuesday night with the Lakeside boys and Newport girls finishing 7-0.

All-Star basketball

Two highly decorated Eastern Washington girls basketball players end their high school careers next month in an all-star game doubleheader.

Crystal Lee of Central Valley and Tricia Lamb of St. John-Endicott headline the Washington team for the Jack Blair Memorial game, which pits players of all classes and classifications in this area against the best from North Idaho.

Three days after that game at Lake City HS in Coeur d’Alene on June 12, Lee and Lamb join eight other Washington standouts in Portland for the Washington-Oregon game.

Washington leads Idaho in the AAU-sanctioned game, which rotates between Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, 3-0.

The Eastern Washington team is coached by Mark Kuipers, who guided West Valley to the State AA championship, and Mike Arte of Gonzaga Prep, which made the State AAA tournament for the first time in more than a decade.Rosters from both teams are in the Stat Sheet.

Baseball poll

Cheney and Lakeside were the lone area teams ranked in the recent state baseball poll out of Anacortes.

Cheney was ranked 10th among Class AA teams, Lakeside seventh among Class A.

Poll leaders were Hudson Bay, AAA; Liberty (Issaquah), AA; and Royal, A. The poll, coordinated by Lem Elway, doesn’t include Class B.

Tennis streak ends

Central Valley’s girls beat Ferris 4-3 Monday to end the Saxons’ 36-match winning streak in Greater Spokane League tennis.

CV had a comedown Tuesday, losing to Gonzaga Prep 6-1. CV has never won the GSL title during the league’s 20-year run.

G-Prep, aiming for its first title since 1984, is host to Ferris this afternoon.

Greene undefeated

Medical Lake senior Josh Greene finished his four-year Northeast A League tennis career last weekend with a 22-0 record.

Greene, bound for Gonzaga University, is 70-10 overall heading into this weekend’s Inland Empire tournament. ML’s NEA record during the last six years is 39-1.

McClain headed for academy

Anne McClain, who plays soccer and softball at Gonzaga Prep, has been accepted into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

McClain, who is hitting around .400 for the Bullpups, hopes to play softball at West Point. She played boys soccer while living in Mexico last year.

Hazing charges

Police may recommend criminal charges against four Elma boys soccer players for reportedly hazing a junior-varsity player.

According to the Aberdeen Daily World, the incident occurred April 15 on a bus ride home from a match at Hoquiam. During the ride, the victim threw something that hit one of the suspects.

After the bus arrived at school, the four players led the victim to a stairwell and applied sports rub all around his buttocks.

The players were reportedly suspended from the team. Coach Steve Valentine had no comment.

City attorney Dan Glenn is reviewing the case.

Elma principal Bill Myhr said officials are checking out other hazing rumors on the soccer team and within other sports.
