Young Teen Learns Hard Way Pointing Toy Gun Not A Game

A 13-year-old learned last week that a child’s toy is not child’s play.

Police arrested the Northeast Spokane boy for first-degree assault when he cocked a black gun and pointed it at a neighbor, according to police.

The gun was a cap pistol, police said. A weapon does not have to be real to trigger felony charges.

The incident happened last Friday as a 39-year-old man was leaving his home on East Greta Avenue. in northeast Spokane. The boy, standing outside the residence, made a comment to the man.

The boy pulled the cap gun from his waistband, cocked it and pointed it at the man. The man drove away and called police.

Officers, after interviewing the boy’s brother, found the cap gun.

Drug charges added to list

While police helped a recently captured fugitive get treatment for a dog bite on Sunday, the man allegedly tried to dump a baggie of hard drugs.

But police said they spotted Michael Jay Johnson dropping a bag of methamphetamine as he was being taken from jail - where he’d just been booked on fugitive charges - to a hospital.

Drug charges were added to outstanding warrants, including a warrant from Oregon for drug possession.

Johnson, 31, of 4818 N. Maple, was arrested when officers pulled him over for expired license tabs near Lincoln and Maxwell streets.

Officers booked him on the Oregon charge and two local warrants. Johnson complained about the dog bite, which he told police was two days old.

After getting treatment, Johnson was returned to jail.
