Plane Breaks Apart, Killing Dozens

Compiled From Wire Services

A Boeing 737 on a domestic flight veered off the runway Thursday night, broke into two and caught fire, killing at least 32 people and injuring dozens more, a government-funded newspaper reported.

China Southern Airliner landed at 9:32 p.m. at Shenzhen’s Huangtian Airport, on the Hong Kong border, and split into pieces three minutes later, according to airport officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The cause of the accident, the first at the airport since it opened about three years ago, was not immediately known. About 29 people were injured, but their conditions were unclear, the Wen Wei Po newspaper reported Friday.

In the report from Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, formerly known as Canton, Wen Wei Po said the plane was carrying 65 passengers and nine crew members.
