CV Honors Members Of Child Support Team

Central Valley School District gave its highest honor to a group of community residents who help guide at-risk students through their public school education.

The Child Support Team was nominated for the community Meritorious Service Award by teachers who also serve on the team.

“Their commitment to the community and schools have been extraordinary. These individuals regularly attend the one-hour, 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning (team) meetings regardless of weather, length of drive or other important issues …” reads one of the nominating letters for the team.

The district held its annual Celebration of Excellence on Thursday evening, honoring students, teachers and other staff. Twenty-eight valedictorians were recognized from the district’s two high schools.

Steve Barnard, current world affairs teacher at Central Valley High School, won the district’s Meritorious Service Award for teachers. That award is new this year.

Another new award, meritorious service for classified staff, went to Lori Klassen, a classroom aide.

Community members on the Child Support Team include: Joe Albert, a Gonzaga University professor and former Central Valley counselor; Sandy Boyle, a social worker with the Department of Social and Health Services; Diane Rainville, a nurse with the Spokane County Health District; Barbara Olson, director of the Spokane Valley Center; Pat Lipp, a mental health counselor with North Pines Counseling; Nadine Larson, a probation counselor with the Spokane County Juvenile Court; Mary Anne Savo, a therapist with the Community Mental Health Center; Melissa Spivey, a parent advocate with SCAN; Dr. Dave Moershel, with the Valley Young People’s Clinic; and Larry Briney, a deputy attorney general.
