Post Falls Teams 2nd In A-1; Kootenai Girls Lead A-3/A-4

Lewiston High School track teams used home-field advantage to take the opening-day lead in both the boys and girls portions of the A-1 Region I meet Friday.

The heavily-favored Bengals boys were up by 16 points over Post Falls and the girls had a five-point lead over the Trojans. The field events were held Friday along with the medley relay and 3,200. Running finals begin today at 1 p.m.

The top two in the individual events as well as the winning relay teams advance to state at Boise State University, May 16-17.

Post Falls thrower Austin Lee won the shot put at 54-1-1/2 and qualified in the discus with a second at 144-1. Josh Mort and Shane Therrian also qualified for state in the jumps.

The Trojans’ Jessica Waltz was also a dual-qualifier with a victory in the triple jump and runner-up finish in the long jump. The Post Falls girls team is in good position because its strength is in the running events.

At the A-3 and A-4 District I-II meets at Kamiah, the Kootenai girls are in first after the first day.

Annie Goodson won the high jump and Jamie Bornitz took the discus title to lead the Warriors to a three-point lead over Troy. Kootenai’s Danyel Hunter picked up a pair of seconds in the high jump and discus.

Like the A-1, mostly field events were held Friday with the running events today. No other North Idaho team is in contention.
