Climber Killed, Others Missing

A Russian climber was killed on the descent from the summit of Mount Everest and two of his partners were missing, the Interfax news agency said Sunday.

Alexander Toroschin, deputy head of the rescue service in the Altai region of Siberia, died during the descent and Ivan Plotnikov and Nikolai Shevchenko were unaccounted for after their successful ascent, Interfax said.

The head of the Almaty Sports Club told Interfax the climbers were last seen by other expedition members at 28,200 feet. A storm set in shortly thereafter, interrupting radio contact with the climbers and making a search impossible.
