Hawks Make Moves

The Seattle Seahawks signed tight end Deems May as a free agent and released tight end Coleman Bell and cornerback Selwyn Jones.

May, a 6-foot-5, 255-pounder, signed a two-year, $800,000 contract. He started 12 games and caught 19 passes for the Chargers last season, but San Diego told him his contract would not be renewed.

At this week’s mini-training camp, he’s competing with Christian Fauria and Carlester Crumpler for a job with the Seahawks.

The releases of Jones, who was scheduled to make $500,000 next season, and Bell were done to free up money.

Toronto signed backup quarterback Andre Ware, 28, prompting the CFL club to say it is the first team in pro football history to have two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks on its roster.

Ware won the 1989 Heisman Trophy while at the University of Houston. Doug Flutie, Toronto’s starting quarterback who led the Argos to the 1996 Grey Cup title, captured the 1984 Heisman while at Boston College.
