Darling Case Will Have New Judge

Whitman County prosecutors have filed an affidavit of prejudice against Wallis Friel that will remove the Superior Court judge from the trial of James Darling, sources confirmed Thursday.

Darling, the former Washington State University football star and a second-round choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in April’s NFL draft, is to be arraigned this morning on burglary and assault charges stemming from a fraternity-party incident last week.

Friel’s replacement was not disclosed.

Rowers in California

The Washington State women’s rowing team travels to Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif., for the Pacific-10 Conference Rowing Championships on Sunday .

Eight Pac-10 schools will compete, with WSU, UCLA and USC only having women’s intercollegiate boats and, thus, not eligible for the coed scoring.

Gonzaga, a Pac-10 affiliate member, will be joined by 14 other Western states crews.

Gymnasts compete at Whitworth

The Washington State Women’s Gymnastics Championships begin a three-day run today at the Whitworth College Fieldhouse.

The USA Gymnastics-sanctioned event features 350 gymnasts who will compete at the compulsory levels 5, 6 and 7. The competition starts today at 4 p.m. and runs through Sunday evening. Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children age 12 and under.

Idaho signs guard

Idaho basketball coach David Farrar wrapped up his 1997 recruiting class when he signed point guard Josh Toal on Thursday. Toal’s signing is the fifth of the late signing period, which ended Thursday. He joins Antonio Simpson (guard), Deon Cash (wing), Mao Tosi (forward) and Clifford Gray (forward) as signees.

Toal comes to Idaho from Belleville Area Community College in Belleville, Ill.
