Tissue’s Soccer Career Far From Over

Jennifer Tissue has to do her student teaching before she can enter the work world, but her postgraduate education begins next week.

The former Shadle Park and Whitworth star is going to spend the summer playing soccer for the San Francisco Night Hawks in the USISL women’s league.

“I called and asked for a tryout. They flew me down in April and said I could come back if I want to,” Tissue said.

She wants to.

“I can play with them,” Tissue said. “I didn’t really have a particularly good tryout, as far as (scoring), but I played well.”

Whitworth’s last day of finals is today and she hopes to be on the road by 6 p.m.

The Night Hawks have been practicing since April but their first game is next Friday.

“It’s really good (soccer),” Tissue said. “A lot of (players) are older than I am. They’re similar to the Shadow, a lot between 24 and 30. Most played at Division I (colleges).”

The Night Hawks play in a division with the California (Sacramento) Storm, NorCal (San Jose) Shockwaves, Silicon Valley (San Jose) Red Devils, Denver Diamonds and Fort Collins Force.

The W-League is in its fourth year. It has 32 teams.

Tissue doesn’t plan to become a soccer vagabond, waiting for the Spokane Shadow to add a women’s team. She wants to get into teaching and coaching as soon as possible when she finishes student teaching at Mount Spokane.

A women’s team could be in the Shadow’s future. Business manager Jeff Robbins said once all the Premier League teams in the Northwest Division are on solid financial ground they would consider getting involved in the W-League.

Home and away

The Shadow has a chance to take command of the Northwest Division with a pair of games this weekend.

The Shadow plays at Bellingham tonight before returning to town to play the Cascade Surge at Albi Stadium Saturday night at 7.

Spokane, Bellingham and Puget Sound are tied for the lead with six points but only the Shadow is undefeated. The other two teams have two losses. Spokane’s two wins are against Puget Sound and Cascade on the road.

Corner kicks

The June 7 game against Yakima is preceded by a Greater Spokane League-Frontier League boys and girls All-Star game. … A youth clinic is scheduled before the June 14 game. … On June 21 is an Eastern Washington-Idaho boys all-star game.

Some of the more interesting Premier League team names include the Southwest Florida Manatees, Lincoln Brigade and Michigan Madness. There’s also the Atlanta Ruckus of the A League, Dublin Xoggz, Hawaii Tsunami, Mobile Revelers and N.Y. Capital District Alleycats of the Pro League.
