Well, It Sounds To Us Like Another Sly Move

Sylvester Stallone, hyping his new flick “Cop Land” at the Cannes Film Festival, is brutally honest about his recent work. To wit:

“Judge Dredd” (1995): “Seeing the dailies, I understood what it was like to be the captain of the Titanic.”

“Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot” (1992): “If it was a question of having my spleen removed with a tractor or watching it again, I’d say, ‘Start up the engine.”’

“Over the Top” (1987): “That was greed at its best. I said, ‘OK, no one’s going to see it, no one will notice.’ It was so stupid.”

As for “Cop Land,” in which he gained 40 pounds to play a pushover of a sheriff trying to battle corruption, Stallone says: “It was the antithesis of who I usually play, a character who creates no menace whatsoever, furniture with a heartbeat.”

Loose talk

An anonymous Disney executive, on Demi Moore’s upcoming “G.I. Jane” (in Newsweek): “The movie’s good and Demi’s great, but how do you market her? People just don’t want to see her.”

All those Bonds just keep on maturing

Pierce Brosnan turns 44 today.

We can’t wait for his next half-baked idea

Howard Stern, trying to pump up his flaccid “Private Parts” film at Cannes, has been his usual charming self. When someone mentioned that at least German critics seemed to like the movie, Stern replied: “Then why did they throw us in ovens?”

It will probably be the apex of his career

Brendan Fraser (“Encino Man,” “Airheads”) has a rather lofty view of his craft. “Each new sortie, each new undertaking, I strive to make it a personal declaration about who I am,” he tells US magazine. “You can only grasp at moments. To dominate an entire project is desirable but not always obtainable.” As for his latest, “George of the Jungle,” he admits it’s “a popcorn movie. There’s no harm in that.”

‘Friends’ don’t let friends drive drunk

Lisa Kudrow, who co-stars with Mira Sorvino in “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” admits she was a real-life geek in high school. As she explains in Redbook: “I was the one after the football game, when everyone said, ‘Come on, Mitch is driving,’ I’d say, ‘Mitch! He’s 16 and he’s had a beer! Why would you get into a car with him?”’

But Jackie still seems to get a lot of action

Hong Kong actress Michelle Yeoh, appearing in the new James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies,” comparing Pierce Brosnan with her usual co-star, Jackie Chan: “Pierce is handsome and suave, while Jackie is cute and funny. When women see Pierce, they swoon. When they see Jackie, they giggle.”

The working title, of course, is ‘Spine’

Movieline magazine reports that Tom Cruise “appears to be after the next ‘Shine,”’ reportedly paying in the six figures for rights to the “true story of a conservative suburban chiropractor who turned into an eccentric artist after suffering a brain aneurysm.”
