Cv, U-Hi Win To Stay Alive For Regional Baseball Berth

The Valley boys ruled Friday’s District 8-AAA baseball tournament openers.

Central Valley and University won at Seafirst Stadium to advance to today’s regional-qualifying round.

CV (11-7) ousted Shadle Park 10-5 while U-Hi (9-8) put out Gonzaga Prep 8-5.

CV and U-Hi play at 11 a.m. today in another loser-out game at Seafirst. The winner plays Greater Spokane League runner-up Ferris (11-6) at 2 p.m. for a Region IV-AAA berth.

GSL champ Mead (13-3), already region-bound, will play today’s survivor at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday for seeding.

CV 10, Shadle Park 5

Ben Miller homered and hit a two-run double in the seventh inning to guide the Bears over the Highlanders (8-9).

Adam Boots had a two-run double in the sixth, and Justin Folkins added a pair of two-out, RBI singles for CV. Nate Bartlett, roughed up by Shadle 11 days before, earned the win.

Kyle Sale and Andy Dunham had two-run doubles in the fourth to carry the Titans over the Bullpups (8-9).

Chris McMurtrey, who lost to G-Prep 2-1 on April 28 despite a four-hitter, picked up the win.

At Franklin Park, Shanelle Test struck out nine, including two to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, and the Panthers (13-4) beat the Bears (12-6) to advance to Tuesday’s title game against University.

Janessa Karstens had three RBIs. Karstens, Kristi House and Missy Bonanno went 2 for 3.

The title game, at 6 p.m. at Franklin, will decide the top two seeds to the Region IV-AAA tournament at Moses Lake. CV will play Rogers at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday for the third and fourth regional seeds.

Cheryl Andrizzi of the Titans (17-0) struck out 10 and beat the Pirates (10-8) by one run for the third time this year.

Rogers’ Jamie Merrill allowed just two hits out of the infield. U-Hi’s Jen Madsen walked, stole second and scored on Megan Mertens’ single. The Pirates’ Angie Vulcano had an RBI single in the sixth.

Tennis

Unseeded Gretchen Smith and Genny Hartman of University provided the biggest upset Friday during the third and fourth rounds of the District 8-AAA tournament.

Smith-Hartman defeated girls doubles top-seeds Alli Powers and Krista Kubiak of Gonzaga Prep 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at Hart Field.

The U-Hi seniors will play for the title Monday, when all district matches shift to Central Valley. Second-seeded Kendra Leyda and Alecia Nelson of G-Prep will be their opponents.

Other top seeds fared better.

Mead’s Ryan Moran, No. 1 in boys singles, advanced to the final and will meet No. 3 Luke Witt of G-Prep. Witt stopped No. 2 Brad Heaton of CV 6-3, 6-2 at CV.

Girls singles No. 1 Darcy Ruemping of Ferris, playing on her home court, beat No. 4 Aryn Volkman of CV 7-6 (7-0), 6-1. Ruemping will play No. 3 Megan McKitterick of Ferris, who beat No. 2 Lisa VanGemert, a Gonzaga Prep freshman, 6-1, 6-1.

Mead’s Brett Kaiser and Tory Gambill, No. 1 in boys doubles, will meet No. 3 Josh Dyk and Nick Mays of Ferris in the final. Dyk-Mays beat No. 2 Spencer Piston and Ben Maixner of Lewis and Clark 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at CV.
