Indonesian Official Wants Rapists Killed

Compiled From Wire Services

Indonesia’s women’s affairs minister on Friday demanded the death penalty for rapists and said police officers, prosecutors and judges handling rape cases should all be women.

Mien Sugandhi made her comments at an election rally for the ruling Golkar Party at Kupang, West Timor, 1,200 miles east of Jakarta, the official Antara news agency said.

She said the penalties imposed by male judges against rapists are often too light. The maximum penalty for rape under Indonesian law now is 12 years in prison.
