Lourdes Choir To Offer Preview Of Concert Planned For Pope

Choir members of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will take time away from packing their bags on Sunday to present a preview of the concert they will perform for Pope John Paul II in Rome. The 3 p.m. concert at the cathedral, 1115 W. Riverside, will be followed by a reception for choir members.

The 17-member choir and Bishop William Skylstad will leave Spokane on Tuesday for a weeklong trip to Rome. An additional 29 people will accompany the choir on its concert tour and pilgrimage.

Choir members have been preparing for months, learning spirituals and a cappella songs, some in Latin. To help fund the trip, they staged several fund-raisers, which earned them $17,000.

In addition to performing for the pope, the choir will visit the home of St. Francis of Assisi, the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Milan and Florence.

March for Jesus today

Spokane’s March for Jesus begins at 11 a.m. today at the Arena parking lot. Walkers of many denominations will begin gathering at 10 a.m.

Marchers will carry banners and flags, play musical instruments, sing songs and dance as they make their way through the streets of downtown Spokane to Riverfront Park’s Lilac Bowl. A rally in the Lilac Bowl will conclude the march.
