No Charges Against Mom Who Left Kid

Associated Press

Charges against a Danish woman who was arrested for leaving her child outside a restaurant in a stroller while she ate with the little girl’s father were effectively dropped Friday.

At prosecutors’ request, Annette Sorensen, a 30-year-old actress visiting from Copenhagen, received what is known as an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal. If she is not arrested within six months, the charges of endangering a child will be dismissed.

The case has reverberated on two continents, with Danes expressing outrage and saying it is common in their country to leave their children unattended while they shop or dine.

New Yorkers were equally stunned by the idea of parents leaving a child on the sidewalk, where even trash cans are chained to keep people from stealing them.

The girl’s father, Exavier Wardlaw, still faces endangering charges.

The incident began last weekend when Sorensen and Wardlaw met for dinner in the East Village. The parents ate at a table separated from their 14-month-old daughter, Liv, by two other tables and a plate-glass window.

Employees and other diners expressed concern about the child’s safety and one of them called police.

The parents were jailed for two nights, and the child was placed in foster care.
