John Cummins Spokane
Memorial service for John D. Cummins, 65, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cummins, who was born in Wallace, died Tuesday.
He graduated from the University of Idaho and the Pacific Coast Banking School.
He served in the infantry, leaving as a captain and company commander.
Mr. Cummins began working for Seafirst Bank in the trust department of the Spokane and Eastern branch in 1956. From 1970 to 1983 he was vice president and manager of the trust department of Seafirst Bank in Vancouver, Wash.
In 1983 he returned to Spokane as vice president and manager of the trust departments of the Eastern Region of Seafirst. He retired in 1992.
Mr. Cummins was a board member of Eastern Washington University Foundation, Spokane Parks and Recreation Foundation, the Boy Scouts Foundation, and the Committee of Life Advocacy Plus. He was also a member of the University of Idaho Boosters, Spokane Club, Spokane Country Club, and St. Stephens’ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Dorothy; two sons, Jim Cummins, of Temple, Texas, and Bill Cummins of Wadsworth, Ohio; two daughters, Patty Houghton of Bothell, Wash., and Marie Kent of Kirkland, Wash.; a brother, David Cummins of Lubbock, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Stephen’s Endowment Foundation or the Hospice of Spokane.
Nancy Blake Post Falls
Memorial service for Nancy May Blake, 61, will be held Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Blake, who was born in Billings, Mont., died Thursday.
She grew up and graduated from high school in Wyoming and went on to graduate from the University of Montana with a degree in business administration and education.
She married Clyde Blake in Cody, Wyo., in 1958.
Mrs. Blake had lived in various cities in Montana before moving to St. Maries, Idaho.
She moved to Post Falls in 1973 and had worked as a legal secretary and teacher.
Mrs. Blake later worked for the Idaho State Probation and Parole Department before retiring in 1994 due to a disability.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde; two sons, Carl Blake of Arizona and Paul Blake of Spokane; a daughter, Kathryn Blake of Billings; a brother, John Ruckman of New Mexico; and eight grandchildren.

Myrna Cochrane Spokane
Service for Myrna L. Cochrane, 59, will be at 1 p.m. today at HennesseySmith Funeral Home. There will be a private inurnment.
Mrs. Cochrane, who was born in White Salmon, Wash., died Wednesday.
She was a 20-year Spokane resident and a caregiver in her home.
Survivors include her companion, Ronald Maione; four sons, Mitchell Rees of Spokane, Melvin Rees of Seattle, and Mark and Michael Rees, both of Blaine, Wash.; a daughter, Lani Rees of Spokane; her mother, Thelma of Spokane; a brother, Larry Jackson of Moses Lake; a sister, Jeannette Moss of Spokane; and eight grandchildren.
Signe Chamberlin Tacoma
Service for Signe E. Chamberlin, 85, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Firlane Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Tacoma. Mrs. Chamberlin’s nephew, Roger Olson, will officiate.
Mrs. Chamberlin, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.
An 80-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Chamberlin worked as a sales clerk at The Crescent for 15 years.
She moved to Tacoma six years ago.
She is survived by her two sons, Kent and Paul Chamberlin, both of Tacoma; and eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jane (Marshall) Canwell Spokane
Funeral Mass for Jane (Marshall) Canwell, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Canwell, who was a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.
She attended Roosevelt Grade School and St. Augustine’s School in Spokane, then attended the Chevy Chase School near Washington, D.C.
In 1941 she married John Canwell in Spokane. She and her husband became partners in Montvale Farms, originally developed along the Little Spokane River by Spokane pioneer Aubrey L. White.
She was a homemaker and helped with many of the duties involved in farming, including delivering calves, assisting the veterinarian in minor surgery, and driving a tractor.
During the Vietnam War, she published and distributed a newsletter from Assumption Catholic Church to soldiers serving in Vietnam.
Mrs. Canwell is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Christopher and Kevin Canwell; a daughter, Sandra Moulton; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Alvin Hancock Spokane
Service for Alvin L. “Al” Hancock will be at 1 p.m. today at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. There will be a private inurnment. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hancock, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday. He was 67.
He served in the Marine Corps through 1951 and worked as an engineer and manager for US West for 40 years.
Mr. Hancock was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Toastmasters.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 46 years, Barbara; two daughters, Pamela Earney and Sherry Lynch; a son, David Hancock; a brother, Norman Hancock; two sisters, Valdene Troyer and Janice Stasch; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
Martha Ferderer Selah, Wash.
Visitation for Martha Ferderer will be today from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Service will be at 11 a.m today at the funeral home. Vault interment will follow at the Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Ferderer, who was born in Odessa, Wash., died Wednesday. She was 79.
She was a 54-year Ritzville resident and a homemaker before moving to Selah seven years ago.
Mrs. Ferderer was a member of the Philadelphia Congregational Church of Ritzville and the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia.
Her husband, Leonard Ferderer, died in 1979.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynette Kramer of Selah; a son, Merrol Ferderer of Cheney; and seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Philadelphia Congregational Church in Ritzville.
Macklyn MacKenzie Spokane
Visitation for Macklyn R. MacKenzie, 69, will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.
Mr. MacKenzie, who was born in Lewiston, died Tuesday.
He served in the Army Air Force during the Korean War and later worked as the branch manager for Norwest Finance Co. from 1956 until he retired in 1985.
Mr. MacKenzie was a member of Berean Bible Church.
His wife, Doreen, died in 1991.
He is survived by four sons, Steven and Doug MacKenzie, both of Spokane, Ronald MacKenzie of Seattle and Scott MacKenzie of Ayr, Scotland; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Annie Pakootas Cleveland Nespelem, Wash.
Funeral Mass for Annie A. Pakootas Cleveland, 87, is planned for 10 a.m. today at the Nespelem Community Center. Burial will follow in the Little Nespelem Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Grand Coulee is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cleveland, who was born in Cashmere, Wash., died Tuesday.
She was a longtime Nespelem resident and a homemaker.
Mrs. Cleveland was a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes and the Catholic Church of Nespelem.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Matthew Pakootas and Steve Cleveland.
Survivors include four sons, Sidney Pakootas, Raymond Pakootas, Henry Pakootas and John Pakootas; three daughters, Lucille Pakootas, Suzanne McKinney and Janet Pakootas; a sister, Lucy, of Toppenish, Wash; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Merrill ‘Jack’ Parks Spokane
Memorial service for Merrill D. “Jack” Parks, 75, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Parks, who was born in Leonard, Minn., died Thursday.
He was a 50-year Spokane resident and worked for Dellen Wood Products and later was a manager for an apartment building on Spokane’s South Side.
Mr. Parks is survived by two sisters, Myrna Mallicoat of Spokane and Helen Bielas of Pellston, Mich.; a brother, Vernon Parks of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and a companion, Laura Marks.

Harold Gates Spokane
Memorial Service for Harold S. Gates, 93, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Fourth Memorial Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gates, who was a lifetime Spokane resident, died Thursday.
In 1926 he began farming on the Orchard Prairie and later owned and operated a grocery store on the north side of Spokane for 17 years.
He then worked as a wholesale grocer for Roundup until retiring in 1971.
Mr. Gates was a member of Fourth Memorial Church.
His wife of 47 years, Cleo Gates, died in 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Gates of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Gerald Gates of Everett; a daughter, Carol Gates of Renton, Wash.; a sister, Laura Harper of Kansas City, Mo.; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
