High-Tech Jobs Grew Rapidly From 1995 To ‘96

The high-tech industry added close to a quarter of a million new jobs to the U.S. economy between 1995 and 1996, according to preliminary 1996 data assembled by the American Electronics Association.

The high-tech industry boasted 4.3 million high-skilled, high-paying, high-tech jobs in 1996, a record high for this decade. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show the high-tech industry added some 240,000 new jobs between 1995 and 1996.

William T. Archey, president and ceo of AEA, said, “Nearly 140,000 new software and computer-related services jobs were added to the U.S. economy between 1995 and 1996, continuing its six-year employment boom. High-tech manufacturing and telecommunications services employment continued their two-year rebound, adding 67,000 jobs and 33,000 jobs, respectively, to the nation’s economy.”

California remained the nation’s No. 1 “cyberstate” with more than 724,000 high-tech jobs. Texas is a distant second with 341,000 jobs.
