Title Retained On Head Butt

Compiled From Wire Services

Luisito Espinosa of the Philippines retained his WBC featherweight title when his fight with Manuel Medina was stopped in the eighth round because the champion was bleeding from a head butt.

Referee Jay Nady halted the fight 1 minute and 22 seconds into the round to allow a ring doctor to examine cuts over both of Espinosa’s eyelids, and the doctor ruled Espinosa was in no shape to continue.

The champion was solidly ahead on the cards of all three judges.
