Apfel Picked As Chief Of Social Security

President Clinton nominated one of his top budget experts, Kenneth S. Apfel, to lead the Social Security Administration.

Apfel has served since 1995 in the White House Office of Management and Budget as director of human resources. His responsibilities have included reviewing for the president the budgets, policy and management of numerous federal social programs including Social Security.

The Social Security Administration sends pension, disability and survivor benefit checks to about one of every five Americans - a total of 48 million people.
