Obituaries

Robert Evans Athol, Idaho

No service will be held for Robert A. Evans, 72. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Evans, who was born in Nebraska, died March 17.

He graduated from high school in Nebraska in 1933 and served with the Army in Okinawa with the 31st and 7th Infantry Divisions. Mr. Evans was awarded the Purple Heart.

He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1950 with two degrees.

Mr. Evans worked for the United States Rubber Co. and then entered the restaurant and food service industry. He owned the Shavano Inn of Pancho Springs, Colo., for five years and in 1969 moved to Bethel, Alaska, where he operated a cab company and was a partner in another cab company until 1974.

Mr. Evans then worked for Alyeska Pipeline as head chef and baker at several pipeline camps and was head chef on off-shore drilling rigs out of Kenai, Alaska, until he retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Kaniksu Quarter Horse Association and the American Legion Post in Athol.

Survivors include his wife, Monte; a stepson, Thomas Monger of Florida; a brother, John Evans of Nebraska; a sister, Shirley Gilmore of Colorado; and four grandchildren.

Carol Smick Spokane

Graveside service for Carol J. Smick, 63, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Spokane Memorial Gardens. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smick, who was born in Branchville, N.J., died Wednesday.

She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing and Gonzaga University.

She had worked as a registered nurse for Sacred Heart Hospital and later served as the in-service director at Eastern State Hospital.

Mrs. Smick was a 48-year Spokane resident and raised and showed registered cattle from 1972 to 1995 with her husband, John.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, John; two daughters, Susan Thompson of Spokane and Deborah Mann of Weiser, Idaho; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Leslie Copas Sandpoint

Private family service for Leslie L. Copas, 84, will be held at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Copas, who was born in Ohio, died Tuesday.

He grew up in Ohio and worked in the coal mines.

Mr. Copas served with the Army during World War II before returning to Ohio.

In 1949 he moved to California and worked in steel foundries. He retired and moved to Sandpoint in 1975.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include a son, Denver Copas of Sandpoint; a granddaughter, Dianna Copas of California; and three great-grandchildren.

Mildred Lockard Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Mildred Margaret Lockard, 85, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the English Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church with burial at St. Thomas Cemetery.

Mrs. Lockard, who was born in North Dakota, died Wednesday.

She moved to North Idaho from North Dakota in 1920 and was a homemaker and ran a motor route for The Spokesman-Review in Dalton Gardens.

She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Ken Fitch of Prichard, Idaho, and David Fitch of Laclede, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Florence Yuse Spokane

Vigil service for Florence E. Yuse will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Yuse, who was born in Old Town, Maine, died Tuesday. She was 75.

She was a 24-year Spokane resident and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. She was also a licensed practical nurse.

Mrs. Yuse was a member of the Sinto Senior Center.

Survivors include her husband, Clement; a daughter, Marvette Phillips of Boca Raton, Fla.; two sons, Michael Dunphy of Redway, Calif., and James Dunphy of Old Town; a sister, Helen Fields of Maine; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Elmer Gieszelmann Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Elmer Theodore William Gieszelmann, 86, will be at 3 p.m. today at the Ervin Madson Farm near Bonners Ferry. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

Mr. Gieszelmann, who was born in Porthill, Idaho died Wednesday.

He had worked for the Boundary County Creamery for 10 years as a butter maker and retired from the Louisiana Pacific mills in 1976 after 18 years.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Grace; a son, Ernest Gieszelmann of Bonners Ferry; a daughter, Fern Webber of Mukilteo, Wash.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lola Bailey Freier St. John, Wash.

Service for Lola Bailey Freier, 90, will be at 11 a.m. today at the St. John United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the St. John Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Freier, who was born in Ewan, Wash., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Ewan High School.

In 1926 she married George Bailey in Spokane.

She and her husband worked on the family farm in the Ewan area until they retired in 1974 and moved to St. John. Her husband died in 1983.

In 1984 she married Herman “Jack” Freier.

Mrs. Freier was a member of the Ewan Community Church, Easton and Pomona Granges, Ewan Neighbors Club and the St. John Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Floyd, Norman and Lyle Bailey, all of St. John; a daughter, Nancy Hanneman of Cheney; two sisters, Dora Breeden Green of Lewiston and Hazel Saddler of Marcus, Wash.; a brother, Mervin Harwood of Lynnwood, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Fair Association or the St. John Fire Department.

Marvin ‘Buck’ Yancer Spokane

Visitation for Marvin Owen “Buck” Yancer, 60, will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m at the funeral home.

Mr. Yancer, who died Wednesday, was born in Saginaw, Mich.

He was a 49-year Spokane resident. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959.

He worked as a fish culturist for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Yancer is survived by his wife, Karol; a son, Christopher Yancer of Spokane; a daughter, Jodi Cox of Portland; and three sisters, Ida Smiley of Elk, and Patricia Clark and Marilyn Zufall, both of Spokane; and two granddaughters.

Margaret Hodkinson Spokane

No service will be held for Margaret Ivy Hodkinson, 98, at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hodkinson, who was born in Scotland, died May 12.

She attended schools in Australia and Canada and later became a U.S. citizen.

She had lived in Spokane 10 years and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Bill Ladd of Auburn, Wash.

Alfred Bolser Kendrick, Idaho

Visitation for Alfred James Bolser, 72, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho. Graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Cemetery in Deary, Idaho.

Mr. Bolser, who was born in Ferndale, Wash., died Thursday.

He grew up in various locations and served with the Army during World War II as a sergeant in a tank division, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.

He married Hazel Thompson Davis in Newport, Wash., in 1948 and settled in Spokane, where he worked as a foreman for Kaiser Aluminum Co.

Mr. Bolser retired from Kaiser in the 1980s after 31 years of service.

After his retirement he moved to Deary, where he lived for 10 years before moving to Kendrick.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, and a daughter, Marcia Bolser of Spokane.

Dorothy Williams Spokane

Memorial service for Dorothy G. Williams will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Williams, who was born in Kansas City, Kan., died Jan. 22. She was 89.

She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College and moved to Spokane from Kansas City in 1972.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Her husband of 32 years, Ralph Williams, died in 1961.

Survivors included a nephew, Vernon Dixon of Spokane.

Margaret Wilson Spokane

No service for Margaret “Maggie” Wilson, 89, will be held at her request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wilson, who died Thursday, was born in Ellendale, Tenn.

She was a 49-year Spokane resident and worked as a janitor for American Building Maintenance.

Her husband, Robert Wilson, died in 1970.

She is survived by a daughter, Margie Carmichael of Spokane; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
