Shadow Trip Reds

Josh Fouts is 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds. Friday night, the Spokane Shadow keeper seemed to fill the entire goal, at least as far as the Yakima Reds are concerned.

Turning aside 14 of Yakima’s 18 shots, Fouts was instrumental as Spokane defeated the Reds 2-1 in the rain at Marquette Stadium to remain unbeaten.

Goals by Zane Higgins and Dave Berto a minute apart late in the first half proved the difference as the USISL Premier League Northwest Division-leading Shadow won a 10th straight game over two seasons.

Heading into a match with the Bellingham Orcas at 7 tonight in Albi Stadium, the Shadow are 5-0 in league, 6-0 overall. Spokane won 3-1 at Bellingham last Friday.

Fouts, who collected a shutout in his previous outing and took a .62 goals-against average into Friday’s game, ran his shutout string to 191 minutes over three games before Octavio DoValle ended it at the 60-minute mark.

Fouts had made a save, but couldn’t control the rebound on the wet turf and the ball skipped off a Yakima player back to DoValle at the top of the 6-yard box.

Openings created by Yakima defensive lapses when the Reds tried to apply pressure in the Spokane end led to Spokane’s goals.

Chad Brown set up Higgins for his third goal of the season. Brown collected the rebound of a Yakima free kick off the Spokane wall and fed a 50-yard pass to a streaking Higgins.

Before the Reds had time to recover, Tim Seely picked up a loose ball, dribbled through the defense and fed Berto.
