Affeldt Strikes Out 18, Sends Northwest Christian To State B Tourney

It was a case of too much Jeremy Affeldt for the Curlew Cougars Saturday at the Region III-B base ball tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

Affeldt struck out 18 batters and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Northwest Christian Crusaders a 3-2 victory and a spot in next weekend’s state tournament at Seafirst Stadium.

NWC made it to the title game by beating Garfield-Palouse 11-5, behind the complete-game, seven-strikeout performance of pitcher Jason Miller.

Curlew advanced to the title game by posting a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Manson.

Russell Strandberg’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference. Curlew trailed 5-0 early in the contest.

Matt Heinzman went 3 for 4 and scored three runs to lead DeSales to a berth in the state tourney with a 10-1 win over the Davenport Gorillas in the Region IV-B title game at Walla Walla.

Davenport made it to the title game with a 9-8 win over Mabton. Eric Orvis’ two-out single scored Chris Payne with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
