U-Hi Girls Come Back From Loss To Get State Trip

Katy Oglesbee had clutch hits in every game and Cheryl Andrizzi had three wins as University rallied from an opening-round loss to make the State AAA girls fastpitch softball tournament.

The Titans, who entered the Region IV tournament in Moses Lake undefeated, lost to Walla Walla Friday night. However, they came back Saturday to keep their season alive.

U-Hi beat Central Valley 7-1, then edged Richland 2-1 before defeating Mead 4-1 for the trip to state.

Walla Walla won the championship with a 3-2 win over Moses Lake.

Mead beat Rogers and Eisenhower to make the winner-to-state game. No details were available.

The teams were tied heading into the sixth inning when the Titans strung together three hits and a Mead error to win the game.

Oglesbee had an RBI single and Nicki Meyer followed with a run-scoring double.

Andrizzi struck out four. She gave up a run in the first when Holly Turner singled and Janessa Karstens tripled.

Andrizzi allowed only one hit, but the Titans, who had 11 hits, couldn’t put the Bombers away until she singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Richland scored in the fourth but the Titans came right back with an Andrizzi triple and Oglesbee single to tie the game.

Lisa Muroya, who was 8 for 13 in the tournament, had three hits in the game.

Oglesbee broke the game open with a bases-loaded triple in the four-run fifth inning.

District 7 AA/A

Colville and West Valley both earned state tournament berths with semifinal wins at the District 7 AA/A softball tournament at Medical Lake.

West Valley earned its fourth straight state berth with a 7-0 win over Cheney. Jennifer Robinson drove in two runs and Gabby McClintock tripled and scored three runs to lead the Eagles.

Colville got two hits each from Tarrah Brown, Ellen Shaw and Melissa Wollan to beat East Valley 6-2. Brown also struck out 11 for the Indians, making their second straight trip to state.

In loser-out games, East Valley beat Freeman 9-3 in a driving rainstorm and Cheney outlasted Colfax 10-7 in a game shortened to six innings by rain.

Colville and West Valley will play Monday to decide the top two seeds to Springfest. Also, East Valley and Cheney will play in a loser-out contest with the winner earning the third berth to state. Both games begin at noon at Waterfront Park in Medical Lake.
